Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Club: A Clockwork Orange

Monday, July 26, 2021

This month, we talk about Anthony Burgess's classic, which the New York Times called “a brilliant novel… a savage satire on the distortions of the single and collective minds.”

In this nightmare vision of the future, where the criminals take over after dark, the story is told by the central character, Alex, a teen who talks in a fantastically inventive slang that evocatively renders his and his friends’ intense reaction against their society.

Dazzling and transgressive, A Clockwork Orange is a frightening fable about good and evil and the meaning of human freedom.

About Anthony Burgess
Anthony Burgess (1917–1993) is the author of many works, including The Wanting Seed, Nothing Like the Sun, and Re Joyce. A Clockwork Orange is one of the "100 best novels" of both Time magazine and Modern Library and is on David Bowie's Book List.

The Menlo Park Library Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Group meets on the fourth Monday of each month.
