HIP Housing: A Home Sharing Program
HIP Housing, a nonprofit organization with over 40 years of housing experience, is reaching out to the community to promote its Home Sharing program. The program is funded by San Mateo County and its cities to help persons who live or work in the county get matched with persons who have a room to rent in their home. There is no fee to participate. Participants must live, work, or attend school in San Mateo County in order to qualify.
Since 1979, HIP Housing has been creating affordable housing opportunities through a Home Sharing Program. Home Sharing involves matching a Home Provider (someone who owns or rents a place and who has extra space available in their place of residence), with someone who is looking for housing. Two types of arrangements are facilitated: a rent exchange involves payment of rent to the Home Provider, while a reduced rent exchange involves helping with cooking, cleaning, being home at night or other household chores for reduced rent.
HIP Housing interviews and screens all clients providing and seeking housing, provides resources on how clients can interview each other and check references, helps housemates complete a written Living Together Agreement and is available for any follow-up support. There is no fee to use the program. Many seniors, working professionals, students, persons on fixed incomes, individuals and families need housing to share or are looking for a place to live.
If you or someone you know would like to find a housemate to help reduce housing or utility costs or to provide some assistance in the home, please call 650-348-6660 or visit www.hiphousing.org to learn more.
