Kite Day

The Community Services Department is hosting the 28th Annual Kite Day at Bedwell-Bayfront Park on May 7th from Noon to 3pm. Residents are encouraged to come out and enjoy kite flying, face painting, snow cones, a hot dog lunch, and bounce houses. $6 will get you a kite and hotdog lunch. Volunteers from the Menlo Park Kiwanis will be helping BBQ hotdogs. This year a number of resource booths will be available including Mid-Peninsula Open Space, Menlo Park Environmental Programs, Belle Haven Library and Menlo Spark who will have information on their programs and initiatives. If the wind is strong enough “Mega Fish”, a 46’ giant kite, might make an appearance in the sky. Kite Day is held annually on the first Saturday in May in conjunction with San Mateo County’s annual Streets Alive! Parks Alive! festivities.

Music@Menlo

Violinist Philip Setzer joins Music@Menlo Artistic Directors David Finckel and Wu Han to present a breathtaking program of three revered piano trios at the Menlo-Atherton Performing Arts Center on May 8th at 6pm. Haydn’s Keyboard Trio in E Major, with its masterful cantabile style, is followed by Mendelssohn’s impassioned Opus 66 Piano Trio, which offers an immediate emotional contrast of rousing intensity and restlessness. The program concludes with Brahms’s majestic, oft-times spiritual and searching Trio in B Major, op. 8.

Second Annual Tuolumne River Film & Culture Fest

The Second Annual Tuolumne River Film and Culture Fest will celebrate water, culture, and community with inspirational short films and live music on May 9th from 6:30pm-6:30pm at the M-A Performing Arts Center. This year's theme is "A river lost, a river saved, and the battles to come". Come see river legend, Mark Dubois, cofounder and first director of Friends of the River, led efforts to save the Stanislaus River, drawing national attention by chaining himself to a boulder in the river canyon. The river was eventually inundated by the New Melones Reservoir, but the campaign changed the political landscape, setting the stage for saving the Tuolumne and other rivers. No major dam has been built in California since. All proceeds benefit the Tuolumne River Trust.

Puppet & Magic Show

Join us for a free Puppet & Magic Show featuring two outstanding Bay Area performers: Steve Chaney and Dante on May 13th from 6-7:30pm at the Menlo-Atherton Performing Arts Center. Steve will delight children with his comedic puppeteering and voices, while Dante will amaze everyone with an award-winning magic performance. All ages are welcome. For 20 years Steve Chaney and his partner, “Corny Crow,” have presented their unique show for children and adults throughout Canada, from the east to west coast in the U.S. for fairs, festivals, schools and libraries. Dante, the San Francisco's 2013 Performer of the Year by RAW, an international independent art organization, is highly sought-after magician. His performances combine magic, balloon twisting, circus arts and tons of silliness! In addition to some award winning entertainment, enjoy fun giveaways, audience participation, and milk & cookies. All ages welcome!
