Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day

On November 14, Beechwood and Belle Haven students participated in the 1st Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. Students and families gathered at Karl E. Clark Park in the Belle Haven neighborhood to celebrate and remember Ruby Bridges. More then 60 people attended the event.

The walk was organized by Menlo Park Mayor Pro Tem Cecilia Taylor and Jen Wolosin from Parents for Safe Routes, co-sponsored by surrounding agencies.

Task Force Meeting

SRTS Task Force Meeting

The last SRTS Task Force meeting was held on December 4. Representatives from different agencies and Parents for Safe Routes attended the meeting. The committee discussed pedestrian and bicycle safety near schools, mode share goals and brainstormed on the Winter SRTS program. Among the shared ideas were:

  • City Council members to “adopt” a school during Walk/Bike to School Day
  • Pop-up and safety structure trials (demonstration projects)
  • Community-led Walks to School (e.g. Ruby Bridges Day)
  • Ride to school with School Principals/VIPs
  • Open Streets Event

The next Task Force meeting will be on March 17, 2020.

Winter Safety Tips

Walk and Roll in Winter!

As days are getting colder, shorter and darker, make sure you are always visible when you travel and that you wear weather-appropriate clothing:

  • Wear bright or reflective clothes or gear
  • Use lights on your bike or carry a flashlight when walking in the dark
  • Wear multiple layers, a hat and gloves to protect you from the cold and the rain.
  • Walk with friends
  • Be careful when crossing the street or a driveway
