Virtual Tour: Museum of Mental Health

Monday, May 10, 2021

Visit the Oregon State Hospital Museum of Mental Health, and learn about the museum and the awareness it helps to foster about mental health.

Take a virtual walk-through of the museum, located on the site of the 130-year-old hospital that was once used as the filming location for the Academy Award-winning movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”

The museum is dedicated to educate and fostering understanding of the many issues of mental illness, and helping to remove stigma. The museum also highlights how beliefs and treatments have changed over time, with the focus today being on the likelihood of recovery.

Many displays at the OSH Museum recount 19th and 20th century medical treatments as well as the lives of patients, many of whom were at the hospital for conditions that might seem surprising today, inclding epilepsy, alcoholism, syphilis, drug addiction, and cancer.

The 2,500 square-foot exhibit space, operated by a non-profit organization in the original Asylum facility, holds, documents, photographs and recordings that share the stories of the people who have lived and worked in the hospital.  In addition to diagnostic and treatment equipment, the museum includes artifacts from the Hospital’s farms, workshops, tunnels and wards.

The museum narrates patient life, which ran the gamut from farm work, to a jazz band, to a baseball team. Another section is devoted to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” the movie that made the hospital famous.

About Mental Health Awareness Month
