Creating Caring Communities

Thursday, May 6, 2021

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, representatives from NAMI San Mateo County will share what it is like to live with a mental health challenge, and how all of us can help improve the quality of life for those experiencing a mental health condition.

Learn about mental illnesses, the impact of negative attitudes, and five things each of us can do to make our community a better place for people who experience a mental illness.

This event is for any person, community or organization interested in learning about mental illnesses and helping to change attitudes towards mental illnesses.

About NAMI
NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) San Mateo County is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with mental illness and their families through support, education, and advocacy. In support of that mission, NAMI SMC works to ensure the dignity of those diagnosed with a severe mental illness and their family members, advocating at the county, state, and national level to secure non-discriminatory access to quality health care, employment opportunities, housing, and education for those with mental illness.

NAMI SMC also works toward bringing an end to the stigma associated with mental illness with education for the public. To support these goals, NAMI SMC holds educational classes and support groups for individuals diagnosed with a severe mental illness, as well as their family members, and conducts outreach into the community about mental illness. NAMI SMC’s Warm Line phone line (650-638-0800) is people’s first point of contact to obtain resources, support and understanding in how to move towards treatment and recovery.

About Mental Health Awareness Month
This May, Menlo Park is partnering with San Mateo County Health and other organizations throughout the area in celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month (MHAM). Join us in the effort to increase awareness and inspire action to reduce stigma against those with mental health and substance use conditions.
