Melanated Reads: One House Over

Monday, June 7, 2021

Our newest book group gathers online to discuss Mary Monroe’s novel tracing the rise and fall of a friendship between two couples in 1930s Alabama.

This month, the Melanated Reads Book Group discusses One House Over, by Mary Monroe.

They have a solid marriage, a thriving business, and the esteem of their close-knit Alabama community—but just once, Joyce and Odell Watson want to break loose and taste life’s wild side, without consequences.

When new neighbors turn out to be high-steppin’ bootleggers, the Watsons plunge headlong into good times and fast living.

About the Melanated Reads Book Group
Melanated Reads is a virtual book group by and for African American women. Though we welcome anyone to join the group, our purpose and focus is on inspiring, uplifting, and providing a safe space for African American women to speak, vent and enjoy honest and open conversation. The book club meets monthly and chooses from books written by African American authors. Our goal for this community-based group is to introduce a variety of writers who will help build a love of reading in a positive environment while meeting new people and gaining new perspectives.
