Mystery Readers Group: Environmental Mysteries

Wednesday, June 16, 2021

First published in 1962, Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring” looked into the dangers of pesticide use, and is credited with launching the environmental movement. The book has affected mystery writing, too—and we’ll discuss it.

Sixty years ago a book was released that has affected the way everyone, including mystery writers, looks at our world. We’ll discuss how Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring” changed the way mystery authors portray environmental crimes.

Examples
  • Park ranger-turned-author Nevada Barr’s Anna Pigeon series, set in national parks
  • Margaret Coe’s Dream Stalker, set at a nuclear waste storage site
  • Maddie Day’s humorous environmental mystery, Nacho Average Murder
  • Carl Hiassen’s Scat, a children's mystery set in a wildlife preserve in the Florida Everglades
The Mystery Readers Group meets online on the third Wednesday of each month, with a different topic or guest author at each meeting.

First-timers are always welcome!
