Film Screening: Na Kamalei - The Men of Hula

Wednesday, December 4, 2019

From ancient times, to the suppression of the dance under missionary ban, the hula survived underground for many years until the cultural renaissance of the 1970s.

Follow the journey of legendary teacher Robert Cazimero and the only all-male hula school in Hawaii as they celebrate their 30th anniversary and prepare to compete at the world’s largest hula festival. Na Kamalei: The Men of Hula goes beyond deep-rooted stereotypes of "grass skirt girls" and reveals a story of Hawaiian pride—past and present.

This event is a part of our program series "Reclaiming Tradition, Reclaiming Health," running from November 4 - December 19, 2019, and accompanied by the traveling exhibition "A Voyage to Health," produced by the National Library of Medicine.
