Revelations: Art of the African American South

Monday, March 12, 2018

Explore powerful African-American artworks with a docent from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Join us as a community speaker from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco provides an entertaining, educational multi-media presentation exploring an important new acquisition of contemporary art from the Souls Grown Deep Foundation.

Historically marginalized, patronized, or promoted with reductive terms such as folk, naive, or outsider, these artists have only recently garnered new exhibition opportunities, museum representation, and foundation and collector support, as well as critical and popular acclaim.

  • Compelling pieces from self-taught artists
  • Art addressing profound and persistent issues in American society
  • Powerful testaments to African-American cultural resilience and survival
  • Works embodying universal human values
This presentation is in conjunction with the special exhibition Revelations: Art from the African American South, on display at the de Young Museum from June 3, 2017 – April 1, 2018.
