Literature Book Club: The Wonder

Tuesday, December 12, 2017

Join us for a discussion of the "The Wonder," by Emma Donoghue, award-winning author of "Room."

The library's Literature Book Club Meets the second Tuesday of the month. December's selection is "The Wonder," by Emma Donoghue.

The Irish Midlands, 1859: An English nurse, Lib Wright, is summoned to a tiny village to observe what some are claiming as a medical anomaly or a miracle - a girl said to have survived without food for months. Tourists have flocked to the cabin of eleven-year-old Anna O'Donnell, and a journalist has come down to cover the sensation. The Wonder is a tale of two strangers who transform each other's lives, a psychological thriller, and a story of love pitted against evil.

The Wonder is Emma Donoghue’s ninth novel, and her first historical one set in her homeland of Ireland.  It was shortlisted for the Shirley Jackson Award for the literature of psychological suspense, horror, and the dark fantastic. Donoghue is now adapting The Wonder into a feature film.

"Fascinating...like The Turn of the Screw, the novel opens irresistibly, when a young woman with a troubled past gets an enigmatic posting in a remote place.... Heartbreaking and transcendent and almost religious in itself."?Sarah Lyall, New York Times
