Regularly scheduled tree maintenance is an important component of sustaining a healthy urban forest. The City’s contractor, West Coast Arborists, maintains street trees are on a 5 year cycle. Maintenance includes a visual inspection of each tree, pruning for vehicular and pedestrian clearance, removing large dead wood, addressing structural defects (such as removing rubbing limbs or reducing heavy end weight of overextended branches), young tree structural pruning and the removal of ivy and support stakes. Benefits of this proactive tree maintenance include improved tree health, reduced maintenance costs and reduced risk. Currently the tree crews are working in District 1, which includes Sharon Park and the Sharon Heights neighborhood. Work is estimated to begin in District 2 this March, which will include Stanford Hills Park and the surrounding neighborhood.
