Have you ever wanted to drive less but weren’t sure how to start? One great resource for San Mateo County is available through Commute.org, whose goal is to facilitate trips to/from and within the County. Resources on how to have an easier, non-driving commute include trip planners, carpool finders, commuter incentive programs and shuttles to and from Caltrain stations.

Did you also know that on the same Commute.org platform, you can sign up and log your trips for free? This is a fun way to track your commute data, showing how much of an impact your changes make. Once you log a trip by type, you can find out how many miles you traveled, carbon dioxide emissions saved, calories burned and even earn fun badges. Instead of seeing it as plain, boring data, this is now a fun way to log your commute and to have fun competitions with co-workers, family and friends.

City of Menlo Park employees recently participated in Commute.org’s Commuter Challenge by tracking commute trips for two months. Cumulatively, City staff made the following commuting impacts:
  • 536 total trips
  • 9,931 miles traveled
  • $1,563 saved
  • 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide saved
  • 9,440 calories burned
