Planning for Summer Learning

Posted on November 22, 2014 at 6:04 pm by Clay Curtin

The Library and Community Services departments have begun planning for a joint summer learning program in the Belle Haven neighborhood for 2015.  The Library was invited to participate in the Summer Learning Program by San Mateo County Library which secured Measure A funds for this effort in Fiscal Year 2013-14 and an additional federal LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) grant for 2015. Five libraries served as sites for the Summer Learning Program in 2014. The program is designed to target underserved populations and recruitment of participants focuses on those reading below grade level at nearby schools where the majority of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.  Participating cities agree to serve meals daily Monday – Friday and offer the Summer Learning Camps curriculums 4 hours per day for 8 weeks.  In summer 2014, over 127 children were enrolled at the five sites with several sites maintaining wait lists.
