Hetch Hetchy Mountain Tunnel closes for 2 months

Posted on January 8, 2017 at 1:04 am by Clay Curtin

On Dec. 29, 2016, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission closed Mountain Tunnel pipeline that connects the water supply from Hetch Hetchy Reservoir to many Bay Area cities, including Menlo Park. This is necessary to accommodate inspections and repairs of the tunnel. Temporarily, the water supply for Menlo Park Municipal Water District customers has switched to local surface reservoirs along the Peninsula through the beginning of March 2017. Customers may notice a change in taste and odor due to this change in water blend, and this typically subsides after a few days. Customers can try running the cold water for a few minutes to clear out water in pipes or consider using a filter to alleviate taste or odor issues. The water is safe to drink and continues to meet all drinking water standards.
