Among the downtown holiday decorations are five living trees on the Paseo. Strung with holiday lights and adorned with burlap and red bows, these trees are alive and growing. To ensure good health,
Public Works staff continues to water and maintain them for now. After the holiday season, they will be transported and planted in city parks. The trees are Monterey cypress (Hesperocyparis macrocarpa). The structure of a Monterey cypress tree loosely resembles a traditional holiday tree with fragrant foliage. Once established, they are drought tolerant and disease resistant. Mature Monterey cypress trees can be viewed at Seminary Oaks Park, growing along Santa Monica Avenue.
