Police welcome two new Menlo Park Police Explorers, Leslie Herrera (19) and Jaida Rullamas (16), who graduated from the 82nd Explorer Academy April 18, 2016. These graduates participated in a nine-week academy held at the College of San Mateo. During this academy, the explorers learned the basics of law enforcement, which included topics in traffic control, evidence searching and processing, search and rescue, crime prevention, first aid and CPR just to name a few. Law enforcement professionals from throughout San Mateo County and Santa Clara County taught each course.
Rullamas received second place for the “Women’s Top Physical Agility” award and Herrera received third place for “Top Overall Academic Award” out of 38 graduates.

The Explorer program is for youth and young adults between the ages of 14-21 who want to learn about law enforcement. The explorers participate in officer ride-alongs, security and community outreach at special events, traffic control and child fingerprinting. The explorers are constantly training to learn the role of police officers. They will be putting their training to use this summer when they compete at a national conference and competition in Flagstaff, Arizona.
