September 2015 saw the official launch of the 2015 Menlo Movie Series in downtown Menlo Park on the Chestnut Paseo. An estimated 1,000 residents attended the series in total to see the Friday night showings of Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Planes Fire & Rescue (2014), Big Hero 6 (2014), and Cinderella (2015). Attendees came early with their families to secure a good spot on the Paseo lawn with their chairs and blankets.

Survey data indicates 80 percent of moviegoers purchased food from one of our downtown merchants before the movie. This successful use of the Paseo received positive feedback from audiences and provided residents with an opportunity to socially engage with community neighbors. Survey comments highlighted the residents’ ability to connect with other members of the community, enjoyment of patronizing local restaurants, a family-friendly night out with a growing group of friends, and the anticipation of next year’s movie series. The Community Services Department plans to expand the number of movies from four to six movies next year establishing a new Menlo Park tradition that will cater to a variety of moviegoers.
