Summer 2015 will mark the first summer learning camp at the Belle Haven Branch Library
. Staff from the library and community services departments will host the camp for eight weeks with the goal of addressing the “summer slide” when children are not in school and lose educational ground, especially in reading. The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading
, a collaborative effort among dozens of foundations, lists summer learning loss as one of the three major obstacles to reading proficiency at the end of third grade. Teachers at the Belle Haven elementary school will help by suggesting students who would benefit from the extra educational support provided by the summer learning camp. A breakfast, snack and lunch will be included for all children who attend. The big meeting room at the library will serve as learning camp central. Summer learning camp is being supported by funds from San Mateo County’s Measure A.
