Middle School Bike Skills Workshop: Students and their families prepare to bike safely to school

Posted on October 1, 2020 at 7:52 pm by Clay Curtin

Wheel Kids, an organization dedicated to youth bicycling and hands-on learning, led the July 26 Middle School Bike Skills workshop in Menlo Park. Four families gathered in the Arrillaga Family Recreation Center’s parking lot to attend the half-day class.

Participants completed the classroom portion of the workshop online before the in-person activity. During the workshop, the structure was modified to follow San Mateo County Health’s COVID-19 guidelines, maintain physical distancing and ensure the safety of participants and instructors.

The class covered:
  • Basic traffic laws
  • Busy intersections
  • The most common types of bike crashes and how to avoid them
  • How to position yourself on the road
  • How to let drivers know your intentions
  • Proper hand signals for cyclists
  • Basic bike and helmet fitting
They practiced their new skills with a two-hour on street ride. Parents and children enjoyed the class and learned about bike safety. If you are interested in attending a future workshop, please email the Safe Routes to School Team.
