On August 20, 2019, the City Council approved the removal of on-street parking spaces on Jefferson Drive and Chrysler Drive to provide for new bike lanes. This was to address the increasing bicycle demand from the new TIDE Academy located on Jefferson Drive and development projects in the Bayfront area. To ease the parking loss, the City Council also approved the removal of an existing no parking zone in front of 135 Commonwealth Drive.
The TIDE Academy, a newly opened high school with capacity for 400 students and 35 faculty and staff, has approximately 100 freshman class students and anticipates to reach full capacity by the 2022-2023 school year.
The new bike lanes provide a safer bicycling experience along Jefferson Drive and Chrysler Drive for students attending TIDE Academy, as well as commuters and recreational bicyclists.
