In March 2014, California
State Coastal Conservancy staff presented the
South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project to the City Council and requested support for the project. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement will be released for public comment later in 2015 and staff plans to present to the City Council the Memorandum of Understanding prepared by the SCC. Included in the project is an alternative that incorporates the use of two ponds for stormwater retention to collect flows from the Bayfront Canal and Atherton Channel. Discussions were held recently with staff from Redwood City, San Mateo County, Stanford University, and BKF, the engineering consultant that is working on the development of the hydraulic model to develop and assess flood control alternatives for the Bayfront Canal and Atherton Channel.
