This project is intended to enhance
traffic safety at the intersection of Middlefield Road and
Ringwood Avenue. This project will include a detailed accident
analysis of the intersection and potential traffic signal
modification to add left-turn phasing to Ringwood Avenue
and northbound Middlefield Road.
The
intersection of Middlefield Road and Ringwood Avenue is
a signalized intersection in the vicinity of Menlo Atherton
High School, Stanford Research Institute (SRI), and the
United States Geological Services (USGS). Approximately
500 feet north of this intersection is the intersection
of Middlefield Road and Ravenswood Avenue. The corridor
between these two intersections is one of the busiest corridors
in Menlo Park.
The City of Menlo Park has
received complaints from residents as well as motorists
about the traffic safety at the intersection, particularly
the lack of protected left turn phases for some of the approaches
to the intersection. This was brought by City staff to the
City's Transportation Commission for its consideration in
2004 and subsequently, became a project priority for the
City for Fiscal Year 2006-07.
As a first step, City staff
will undertake a detailed accident analysis at the intersection
to determine the types of collisions that had occurred at
this intersection.
