Project Description:

The High Speed Rail project is planned to consist of a rail network from San Diego to Sacramento with a line from the Central Valley to San Francisco. The trains will travel at approximately 220 MPH in rural areas and approximately 125 MPH in urban areas. The project is managed by the state through the High Speed Rail Authority. The High Speed Rail system will use the Caltrain alignment from San Jose to San Francisco.

Current Activities:

The City Council High Speed Rail Subcommittee will have open public meetings every four weeks starting this Monday, August 30th. The meeting will be held in the City Council Conference Room in the Main Administration Building from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. For an agenda please click here.

June 22, 2010

The City Council approved a comment letter on the High Speed Rail Alternatives Analysis report at the June 22, 2010 Council meeting. The letter and a cover letter are linked on the left side of this page.

June 1, 2010

A Community Workshop on High Speed Rail was held. The purpose of the workship was to help inform the Menlo Park City Council on the community’s preference for alignment alternatives (alternatives to be considered include: trench, tunnel, elevated or at-grade).  Council will consider this community input as part of their communication to High Speed Rail about which alternatives to include when they prepare the draft Environmental Impact Report.

April 28, 2010

The City Council considered a draft letter commenting on the revised Program Level Environmental Documents for the Central Valley to Bay Area segement of the High Speed Rail at its April 20, 2010 meeting. The Council provided comments and direction for the Mayor to finalize the letter. A copy of the staff report and final letter are linked on the left side of the page.

February 16, 2010

Community input sought on High Speed Rail Alternatives Analysis. The meeting is currently scheduled for Friday, February 19, 2:30 pm in the Menlo Park Council Chambers, located at 701 Laurel Street in Menlo Park. Click Here for the Press Release.

September 18, 2009

The Peninsula Cities Consortium will be holding a design workshop related to High Speed Rail on October 3rd in Palo Alto. Space is limited and you need to register in advance to attend. The spaces are available on a first come-first served basis. The following webpage (click here) has further information on the event and how to register. Don't Wait!

August 21, 2009

The Peninsula Cities Consortium will hold a "Teach-In" to provide an opportunity to learn more about the proposed California High Speed Rail Project. More information as follows:

"Members of the public, elected officials, transit experts, transit agency representatives and rail enthusiasts are invited to the High Speed Rail Teach-In on Saturday, September 12, to learn about this once-in-a-century project being planned on the Peninsula. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Palo Alto City Hall, 250 Hamilton Street, Palo Alto. Admission is free, but space is limited. Advance reservations are required at http://peninsulacities.eventbrite.com."

June 29, 2009

The High Speed Rail Authority has relesased the Draft Scoping Report for the Project-Level EIR for the San Jose to San Francisco segment of the train. The report can be found on the High Speed Rail Authoirty's website under the library section. For a direct link to the report click here. The appendices cannot be linked directly and are located under the library section of the CA High Speed Rail website.

April 21, 2009

The City Council considered a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to form the Peninsula Cities Consortium with other Cities along the Peninsula to interact with High Speed Rail. A link to the MOU and staff report to Council are attached on the left side of the page.

The Council approved the MOU at the April 21, 2009 Council meeting.

March 5, 2009

The City Council considered a draft letter commenting on the scope of the Project Level Environmental Documents for the project at its February 24, 2009 meeting. The Council provided comments and direction to bring the letter back with revisions. The letter will be brought back to Council in late March. The staff report and a copy of the draft letter are linked on the left side of the page. Also, the Council considered the Mission Statement for the High Speed Rail Subcommittee created by Council. The Council provided comments and direction to bring the Mission Statement back with revisions.The Mission Statement will be brought back to Counil in late March also. This staff report and draft Mission Statement are also linked on the left side of the page.

The High Speed Rail Authority has provided a response to the City's comments on the Program Level (overview) Environmental Documents. The City's letter and the Authority's responses are provided as a link on the left side of the page.

A calendar of High Speed Rail related meetings has been provided on the left side of the page. The location of the agenda for each meeting is provided in the description of the meeting when clicked.

February 23, 2009

The City Council will consider a draft letter commenting on the scope of the Environmental Documents for the project at its February 24, 2009 meeting. The staff report and a copy of the draft letter are linked on the left side of the page. Also, the Council will consider the Mission Statement for the High Speed Rail Subcommittee created by Council. This staff report and draft Mission Statement are also linked on the left side of the page.

Also, the High Speed Rail Authority has extended the comment due date to April 6, 2009.

January 26, 2009

The High Speed Rail Authority is in the process of preparing the required environmental documents and analyses for the project. The first step is to determine the scope of review and items to include in the environmental documents and studies. The High Speed Rail Authority is seeking input on the scope of the environmental review and comments are due by March 6, 2009. Further information on public meetings and ways to provide comments to the Authority on the project can be found at the California High Speed Rail website via the link provided on the left side of this webpage.

November 4, 2008

Proposition 1A was approved by the voters of California, which provides bond financing in the amount of $9.95 Billion for the project.
