Water Consumption Calculator and Conservation Tips
Click here to find to estimate your water consumption, and then use the tips below to reduce your water footprint!
1. Water the lawn and flower beds in the morning or late in the evening to maximize the amount of water which reaches the plant roots (otherwise most of the water will evaporate).
2. Always use a broom to clean walkways, driveways, and entrances rather than hosing off these areas. This also prevents pollution from entering our drinking water and the bay.
3. Replace your old water fixtures (e.g., hose nozzles, bathroom and kitchen sink aerators, and showerheads) with water-efficient ones.
4. Fix leaking faucets and toilets that flush themselves. Research has shown that an average of 8% (or more) of all home water is wasted through leaks. Fixing a leak can save 500 gallons of water each month.
5. Looking to replace old appliances that use water? Look for the WaterSense label! The WaterSense label stands for efficiency and performance. For more information on WaterSense labeled products and programs, please visit the WaterSense Products and Programs page. Using WaterSense labeled products will save you about 20 percent of the water that average products would use.
6. Take only five minute showers.
7. If you have a swimming pool, get a cover for it. Evaporation can make hundreds, even thousands, of gallons of water disappear. A six foot pool with average sun and wind exposure loses approximately 1,000 gallons of water per month, enough to keep a family of four in drinking water for nearly a year and a half.
