Home Energy Renovation Opportunity program

In April 2014, City Council adopted the Home Energy Renovation Opportunity (HERO) Program, which is approved in over 200 cities in California and funds over 95 percent of all residential Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) projects nationwide.

The HERO program enables residential property owners to install energy and water efficient improvements and renewable energy systems by having a special assessment put on their property tax bill. Payments are made through the county with the property taxes over time, and just like a mortgage, interest paid on the principal balance is tax deductible.

Over 900,000 product models are eligible for HERO including: solar photovoltaic systems; space heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; cool roof systems; energy efficient windows, skylights, and doors; solar thermal water heating; air sealing and weatherization; insulation; indoor energy efficient light fixtures; and water efficiency measures.
